Historically armies and guns have always been collectible. War memorabilia is always interesting in the market, especially when it has a documented and interesting history. Original wartime items such as weapons, medals, field equipment, flags, uniforms, etc., can be highly desirable. Militaria is an interesting area to collect with a huge range of eras and objects to explore.

Britain's Hollow Cast Toy Soldiers Continue To Attract Collectors Decades After Their Manufacture.

In both our Albany NY and Saratoga NY offices, we frequently purchase memorabilia from the Revolutionary, Civil and Spanish American wars as well as World War I and World War II. These included uniforms, dog tags and, for later wars, trench art. Trench art refers to a practice that began during World War I. Bored soldiers, foxes, and those stuck in trenches, would make beautiful things out of the materials available. Often, this was done by engraving bullet cases with ornate designs. World War I trench art varies widely in scope, and well-crafted pieces can fetch high prices among collectors. Traditional insignia is also highly desirable. Complete uniforms are very valuable, especially in very good condition. The individual medals and decorations awarded to soldiers can also generate a lot of interest. This is especially true for rare and high honors.

The weapons supplied by the army are also interesting. We have purchased many WW1 and WW2 daggers and the market for them continues. Traditional knives like kukri, Nepali blades supplied to British soldiers during WW2, machetes with or without decorations and other blades are something we love to see and work with. Daggers are more valuable in their original sheaths. This also applies to swords. We source many types of swords and from all cultures, including functional and clothing ones. There is particularly high interest in traditional Japanese katana and wakizashi.

Along with weapons, we also love to see traditional armor. Armor has changed a lot in the last thousand years, going from chain mail to steel plates, wood and leather suits. Pieces made from organic materials tend to corrode over time, so metal-based armor in the best condition is the most sought after.

We are also interested in buying antique weapons. Applicable firearms laws, especially the National Firearms Act, restrict the purchase of many antique firearms. Excluded from these regulations are firearms manufactured before 1898 which do not use a conventional centerfire ignition system or similar flintlock rifle and for which ammunition is not readily available. Older pistols and rifles that are excluded from these rules can often have beautiful detailing, similar to this pair of flintlock pistols. Well-made weapons with metal detailing or inlay can fetch high prices among collectors. There is hardly a field of interest as vast and inexhaustible as this: militaria. Our catalog reflects this wide range of items with a military context - from objects, orders and decorations from almost every country in the world, to uniforms and equipment (including service weapons, if not already included in the "Firearms" catalog ), documents. and photographs, whether they're pay stubs or Army letters, certificates of appointment, or autographs from prominent personalities.

The World's Premier Online Auctions

Chronologically, the catalog begins in the mid-1700s, which can be seen as a turning point in the production of military equipment towards standardized mass production. Well, this was not exactly the first time: the Romans had already mass-produced a kind of banner, but the objects of this period are present in the "Ancient weapons, armor and antiquities" catalog. The catalog of militaria ends more or less in the recent past, with such interesting objects as the ejection seat of a fighter jet or the aiming device of a tank.

Geographically, there are no borders from the Norwegian military to South Africa, from Australia to Chile. Particular emphasis is placed on the great European powers, from Napoleonic France to Tsarist Russia, from German states to the Habsburg Monarchy.

Items from Germany from 1919 to 1945 are not included in this catalogue. Then, take a look at our "Contemporary History" catalogue!
